How Long Does Couples Counselling Take?
“We probably only need one or two sessions.”
It is something I hear from time to time, and it is completely understandable.
When your relationship is struggling, you want things to feel better as quickly as possible. And sometimes, a few sessions really can make a significant difference, but there is no set number of sessions that every couple needs.
What can happen in the first few sessions?
The first few sessions can be incredibly valuable.
They give you an opportunity to step out of the usual cycle of arguments and look at what is actually happening in your relationship.
You may begin to understand:
Why you keep having the same arguments
What sits underneath the conflict
How each of you responds when you feel hurt, criticized or unheard
Why communication has become difficult
What has happened to the emotional connection between you
What each of you needs from the other
Where you may be getting stuck in the same patterns
Sometimes understanding the pattern can be a huge relief but understanding a pattern and changing it are two different things.
Why can change take time?
Most relationship difficulties don't develop overnight.
Arguments may have been repeating for years. Hurt may have built up. Trust may have been damaged. Or you may both have developed ways of protecting yourselves such as withdrawing, becoming defensive or avoiding difficult conversations.
Even when you understand these patterns, learning to respond differently takes practice.
It takes time to learn to listen without becoming defensive, express hurt without attacking, stay connected during difficult conversations and begin rebuilding trust.
Does counselling mean months of sessions?
Not necessarily. Some couples may find that a small number of sessions gives them the clarity and practical tools they need. Others may benefit from more ongoing support, particularly when there has been significant hurt, infidelity, longstanding conflict or a loss of connection.
Counselling should have a purpose. It isn't about keeping couples in therapy indefinitely. It is about helping you understand what is happening, identify what needs to change and develop practical ways of moving forward.
The goal isn't simply to complete a certain number of sessions. It's to create meaningful change in your relationship.
Sometimes the most important first step is simply recognizing:
“We don't want to keep doing this the way we've been doing it” and that can be where change begins.
